1963 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport – Dick Thompson–Signed Recreation

One of the Finest, Most Faithful Examples Ever Constructed

This extraordinary recreation of the legendary 1963 Corvette Grand Sport “Lightweight” stands as one of the most accurate and meticulously crafted tributes to the original race car ever produced. Among all known recreations, this is the only one personally signed by Dick “The Flying Dentist” Thompson—the factory Corvette driver who won more races in these cars than any other GM pilot of the era.

When the builders transported the car to his Florida home, Thompson drove it, inspected it, and declared it the only Grand Sport recreation he would put his name on—a testament to its unrivaled authenticity and craftsmanship.

Authenticity & Engineering Excellence

Every major component was hand-built to mirror the original 1963 Grand Sport #5—currently residing in Lakeland, Florida—with only two deliberate improvements: C4 suspension and adjustable coil-over shocks, giving this car dramatically superior handling compared to the original transverse-leaf design.

Even the frame is true to form:

An exact reproduction of the original 4-inch drawn-over-mandrel steel tube chassis.

Under the hood, performance matches the visual drama:

 • Chevrolet 400ci V8, professionally built to approx. 475 horsepower

 • Moon cross-draft intake with four Weber carburetors delivering lightning-fast throttle response

 • Richmond 4-speed race transmission

 • Heavy-duty mechanical clutch

 • Modern C4 brake system for superior stopping power

Period-Correct Features & Track Equipment

The car was engineered with full racing intent, including proper accommodation for three air jacks (two front, one rear) for rapid tire changes—just like the originals. They remain unmounted but ready to install.

In the rear, authentic Stewart Warner vintage pumps are present—two for fuel, one for the differential cooling system. For reliability, the builders opted to use a modern high-volume electric pump, leaving the originals intact but disconnected.

Steering is handled by an adjustable Sweetwater power unit, providing the authentic high-speed feel of the 1963 racers while dramatically improving low-speed maneuverability and parking.

All wheels are true racing-style knock-offs, properly safety-wired, and the front end houses period-correct headlamps beneath plexiglass covers to preserve the iconic Grand Sport look.

Interior – As Faithful as It Gets

Everything inside was recreated to match the original GS race cars, down to the smallest detail:

 • Formed metal door panels

 • Correct switchgear and auxiliary gauges

 • Original-style dash, speedometer, and Grand Sport-specific tachometer (nearly impossible to source today)

 • Lexan rear and side windows

 • Rubber “push-to-wash” windshield washer bulb

 • Custom race-style fuel filler assembly

 • Period-correct roll bar with 8mm driver-critique movie camera

 • Functional, competition-ready layout throughout

Adding to its provenance are two authentic dash signatures by Dick Thompson—plus an additional signature from Bob Tullius, legendary racer and longtime manager of Jaguar Racing International, who competed alongside Thompson in-period.

A Museum-Grade, Race-Ready Masterpiece

Built with extraordinary accuracy, period engineering, and exceptional mechanical integrity, this Grand Sport recreation is not merely a tribute—it’s one of the most faithful recreations ever crafted, elevated further by the endorsements of two racing legends.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of Corvette racing history—executed at the highest level, visually stunning, mechanically exceptional, and the only recreation personally signed and approved by Dick Thompson.
